"Project management is the discipline of organizing and managing resources in such a way that these resources deliver all the work required to complete a project within defined scope, time and cost contraints. A project is a temporary and one-time endeavour undertaken to create a unique product or service." Wikipedia
One of the dominant project management systems in the UK is PRINCE, which stands for Projects in Controlled Environments.
In a sense these definitions set out clearly the difference between project management and the Seven Sides of Leadership. The Seven Sides of Educational Leadership represent a way of looking at the world and it should become an ever-present as opposed to a temporary endeavour. It also enables the leader to operate in a complex - as opposed to controlled - environment.
Yet project management can play an important part within the Seven Sides - see Housebuilder - and a well constructed project might encompass other perspectives from the Seven Sides such as the Gardener, Inventor or Villager.
However, if a leader used project management as the only means to transform their culture they would be in danger of falling into the trap of becoming mechanistic and missing out on many of the more subtle things which they must do to ensure a well connected approach.
