The Seven Sides of Leadership taps into educational leaders' intuitive appreciation of the change process and provides them with a meaningful tool with which to to analyse, plan and effect 'real' cultural change in their own complex environment.
Yet the dominant existing change strategies ignore this complexity and try to reduce the process to a series of sequential steps - in the assumption that if done in the correct order they will result in success. Such thinking has led educators into a bureaucratic, time consuming and paper driven exercise which rarely satisfies their needs.
By reflecting upon the elements of successful change experiences in education - and linking this with the notion of systems thinking - the seven sides of educational leadership have been developed using seven metaphors.
Throughout human history metaphors have been recognised as a way in which to tell stories with much deeper and more significant meaning in a manner which people can readily recall. The multiple metaphor model therefore has the added benefit of providing people with a picture of the organisation which is both portable, transferable and more extensive than a single metaphor and its associated limitations.
The Seven Sides of Educational Leadership therefore provides a cultural context within which the leader can effectively apply and demonstrate their management competencies.
